Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
If you have an injury or illness which affects how you move, you may substantially benefit from the treatment of one of our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Specialists at AOA. We treat a wide range of orthopedic and spinal issues, from sore shoulders and sports injuries to spinal cord disorders. We also aid in the restoration of functional mobility to people with a variety of physical limitations. Our focus is on developing a patient-specific program to help you move more freely again.
What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?
PM&R, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine devoted to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that may produce temporary or permanent impairment or functional disability. Our physicians will utilize a variety of pain-reducing
modalities such as physical therapy, which sometimes combined with medication and injections can prevent a patient from needing surgical intervention altogether.
Our PM&R physicians are nerve, muscle, bone and joint experts. With their specialty board-certified training, they can treat patients of all ages, both children and adults, primarily in five key areas of medical care:
Acute and chronic pain syndromes, including the diagnosis and treatment of sports and work injuries
Back and neck pain disorders
Degenerative conditions such as arthritis
Nerve pain and injuries
What you can expect from a physical medicine physician
Once you start treatment, you will be under the expert care of one of our board-certified physical medicine physicians. You can expect them to:
Diagnose and treat pain
Restore maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions
Treat the whole person, not just the problem area
Provide non-surgical treatments
Explain your medical problems and treatment/prevention plan
