Spine Surgery: Dr. Eric Wieser Performs Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries at AMH
Eric Wieser, M.D., spinal surgery specialist on Arlington Memorial Hospital's (AMH) medical staff, has been performing minimally-invasive spine surgeries at AMH since last summer. The only fellowship-trained spine surgeon in Arlington, Wieser came home to Texas following his fellowship at UCLA School of Medicine. During his year-long fellowship, Wieser was trained to perform minimally-invasive spine surgery.
"The best candidates for minimally-invasive spine surgery tend to be those with disc herniation or degenerative disc disease," says Wieser. "I utilize tubes and an operating microscope to decompress spinal structures." Due to the precision necessary, Wieser says surgeons must perform many open surgeries before acquiring the skill for minimally-invasive procedures.

The greatest benefit of minimally-invasive procedures is obvious -- they're less invasive. Less invasion reduces the risk of trauma and morbidity. Smaller incisions also mean reduced trauma to the back muscles, shorter hospital stays, less post-operative pain and faster recovery.
Along with minimally-invasive discectomies, Wieser performs minimally-invasive fusion procedures and offers comprehensive spine care including treatment of complex cervical conditions, spine deformity in adults and children, total disc replacement and degenerative conditions of the spine.
"Patients referred to me with a herniated disc or chronic back pain can get into my office quickly," says Wieser, "and once here, I keep the primary physician informed of the treatment plan." Wieser practices with Arlington Orthopedic Associates, the largest orthopedic specialty group in North Texas.
